Dipping sauces add deeper flavor to sides, whether these are French fries or onion rings, as well as to entrées like chicken fingers and wings. We must say that without dipping sauces, our fast-food dining experience will be sorely incomplete! But not all fast-food dipping sauces are created equal and so we chose a few that we love from our favorite chains.
Zaxby’s Zax Sauce
Of course, you will find dozens of copycat recipes for making Zax Sauce and you can make them at home. The ingredients are readily available and the recipe instructions simple: Just mix well mayonnaise, ketchup and garlic powder before mixing in Worcestershire sauce.
But there’s nothing like the original Zax Sauce! In fact, the chain says it’s the sauce that put its name on the map. We aren’t surprised as it has a creamy texture and a zesty spicy flavor with a subtle tangy taste. It’s the perfect dipping sauce for Zaxby’s famous Chicken Fingerz.
For variety, Zaxby’s also offers two other dipping sauces. There’s the Ranch sauce, a creamy and cool sauce that lends itself well as an all-around dipping accompaniment. The Honey Mustard sauce is a little bit of sweet and tangy, a great dip for people with a sweet tooth even in their savory dishes.
Zaxby’s also has several tossing sauces to choose from! The Original sauce is its take on the classic buffalo sauce, the Wimpy sauce is a mildly spicy sauce and the Nuclear sauce will test your spice tolerance to the max. Other flavors include Teriyaki (sweet with ginger, garlic and soy), Hot Honey Mustard (mildly spicy with a sweet tone), and Tongue Torch.
With the ever-affordable Zaxby’s prices, do you really have a reason NOT to eat here?
The Chick-fil-A chicken burgers and tenders are the best we’ve eaten in the fast-food industry. Such is their delicious quality that there’s really no need for dipping sauces! But like Mount Everest, Chick-fil-A’s sauces are there and, thus, these should be enjoyed to the hilt. Besides, these dipping sauces add extra flavor and texture to the chicken.
While there are several choices of Chick-fil-A dipping sauces, we have to say that the original sauce is the best. The original sauce was accidentally created in the 1980s when an employee mixed honey mustard and BBQ sauce. We love it because it has an aioli-like thickness that clings to just about anything dipped into it – strips, nuggets and waffle fries included.
It’s also something that has a balance of flavors – sweet from the honey, spicy from the mustard and savory from the BBQ. We suspect that it will make even bland food taste nearly amazing.
But don’t dismiss the other dipping sauces at Chick-fil-A, too! There’s the Polynesian sauce with its pineapple-like sweetness and tropical flavors; the Zesty Buffalo sauce with its spicy kick; and the Garden Herb with its well-seasoned flavor.
McDonald’s Honey Mustard
McDonald’s offers plenty of dipping sauces but we love the Honey Mustard the best! There’s a perfect balance between the sweetness of the honey and the spiciness of the mustard, with no flavor overwhelming the other. It’s the perfect dipping sauce for just about anything that can be dipped in it, from French fries to chicken nuggets.
We don’t have any beef, so to speak, with McDonald’s other dipping sauces but there’s still room for improvement. The Spicy Buffalo and Hot Mustard, for example, isn’t as hot as expected while the Tangy BBQ isn’t robust. Even the Sweet and Sour sauce lacks balance between its sweet and sour notes.
Whataburger’s Spicy Ketchup
There’s nothing extraordinary about the appearance and taste of Whataburger’s Spicy Ketchup sauce. In fact, it looks and tastes like any other ketchup sold in supermarkets. But as soon as you taste it on French fries, you will know that it isn’t your regular ketchup!
Its heat hits your palate out of nowhere, holds you in its spell and pushes you to take another hit. You want to stop because the heat can take over your mouth but as soon as it passes, you want more. Its secret lies in the jalapeno pepper puree mixed into the ketchup – just enough for the kick but not too much to make you reach for cold milk.
Whataburger’ other dipping sauces are also good, if not great. There’s the Jalapeno Ranch, a creamy and spicy sauce with a smooth burn, and the Honey BBQ, a tomato-rich sauce with a sweet finish great for fries.
Which of these dipping sauce is the best? Well, it depends on your personal preferences and it’s something we can’t impose on you and on others.
We also think that every fast-food makes its dipping sauces to complement the flavors of their specific food. For example, you may find it weird to dip McDonald’s chicken nuggets into the Zax Sauce.
Then again, you may want to experiment with matching dipping sauces and food from different fast-food chains just for the fun of it! There’s no law disallowing it, after all, so go ahead.
